How to become a Construction Painter

Construction painters learn their trade either informally on the job, or through a three- or four-year apprenticeship sponsored through a union. Some contractors also offer their own training program.

Through technical instruction, apprentices learn how to use and care for tools and equipment, prepare surfaces, mix and match paint, and read blueprints. They also learn application techniques, characteristics of different finishes, wood finishing, and safety practices.
